Deb Haaland is one of the two first Native American women elected to congress on November 6, 2018. She is a Democrat and Member-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives
from New Mexico’s 1st district. She is a member of New Mexico’s Pueblo of Laguna tribe. She is a single mom and a lawyer. Haaland ran on a platform that included Universal healthcare, free college tuition, 15 dollar minimum wage, and clean energy.
Sharice Davids is a Democrat and Member-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives
from Kansas’s 3rd district. She is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Davids identifies as a lesbian, making her the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas. She is a lawyer and a former mixed martial arts fighter. Davids ran on a platform that included supporting the expansion of Medicaid, gun safety, protecting the environment, and comprehensive immigration reform.
