After Verizon dramatically slowed the internet service of firefighters battling the largest wildfire in California’s history earlier this summer, the statewide union for firefighters is urging California lawmakers to support a bill that advocates call the “gold standard” of state-level net neutrality legislation.
Former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who wrote the 2015 net neutrality rules, states that throttling and net neutrality ARE related and it was definitely an issue addressed under the net neutrality rules that he wrote:
Net neutrality would have forced Verizon to report out that they were throttling to regulators. They are currently no longer required to produce such a report, which means they can throttle without people knowing.
Also, Net Neutrality gave the FCC oversight by reclassifying broadband internet service under Title II of the Communications Act. Wheeler was working on this throttling issue until Trump won and the Republicans repealed Net Neutrality.
