The bought Republican judges on the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are just like people and entitled to the same First Amendment rights. It gave them the same right to spend money on politics as ordinary Americans have. This goes against decades of sane law: “In 1907, as corporations reached new heights of wealth and power, Congress made its views of the relationship between corporations and campaigning clear: It banned them from contributing to candidates.” (source)
This is a crazy and corrupt decision. Corporations are not people. Spending money isn’t speech. If that were true, then the more money you have the more speech you have. That’s oligarchy not democracy.
Another reason it has to go: Foreign powers can infiltrate our democracy:
“America’s Founders were rightly worried about foreign powers influencing our democracy. The Constitution bans anyone who holds “any office of profit or trust” from accepting any foreign “present, emolument, office, or title . . . without the consent of the Congress.” Current federal law — upheld by the Supreme Court as recently as 2012 — prohibits foreign governments, foreign-based companies, and people who are not US citizens or permanent residents from contributing or spending money in connection with any federal, state, or local election. But there’s a loophole: These foreign entities can invest money through US-based corporations that, per the Citizens United ruling, can then spend as much of that money as they want on American elections.” (source)
