The Ghost Bat (Macroderma gigas) is the largest microbat in Australia and the second-largest in the world.
It is Australia’s only truly carnivorous bat- it eats large insects, small lizards and frogs, small birds and mammals, including other bats.
It is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/12590/3362578
These strange wondrous weirdos must be protected. The Australian Wildlife Conservancy guards a Ghost Bat roost at Pungalina http://www.australianwildlife.org/wildlife/ghost-bat.aspx
The Ghost Bat’s habitat is widespread across northern Australia, from arid areas to rainforest.
They give birth to a single pup in Aug or September.
Happy Australia Day!
