Ed Gernon adopted a German Shepherd mix from the streets. He named him Rex. Abandoned as a puppy, Rex had a really tough life before he was rescued, but within a month of being adopted he’d rescued somebody himself.
Rex found a tiny hummingbird on the sidewalk covered in ants. His owner thought the little bird was dead but Rex refused to leave her side.
Rex wouldn’t budge and Gernon finally realized she was still breathing. “This fragile creature… and he was trying to protect her so I thought I’d go the distance.” He brought the hummingbird home and nursed her back to health with a sugar syrup mixture fed every 15 minutes. He even taught her how to fly using a hair dryer.
Gernon named her Hummer. It’s been more than a year but Hummer refuses to leave, insisting on staying close to him and the dog who steadfastly refused to abandon her. Gernon says that Hummer “developed a total crush on Rex” – preferring never to leave his side. She even bathes in his water dish while he’s eating.
Now that Hummer can fly, Gernon knows it’s time for her to find a mate, so he’s been leaving doors and windows open for Hummer to leave, but so far, she prefers hovering around Rex, wherever he goes.
