Albert Bierstadt, American Painter
“Sierra Nevada” by Albert Bierstadt (circa 1871)
Albert Bierstadt, (1830 – 1902) was an American artist (born in Germany) who spent most of his professional life in New York City. His huge panoramic scenes of the American West were (and are) tremendously popular.
It’s really interesting how he worked: He made several trips to the Far West (the Rockies, the California Coast, etc) where he made small on-the-spot paintings. Upon returning to his studio in New York city, he would then execute these vast canvases of grandeur and majesty.
